About
michael bogden

Michael is a residency and fellowship trained sports physical therapist with a lifelong interest in sports nutrition nearly changing his major in college to pursue nutrition before opting for physical therapy.

Michael’s background includes playing football at John Carroll University where he pursued a degree in Exercise Science and Walsh University where he received his Doctorate in Physical Therapy. Following PT school he was the second graduate ever to complete the Cleveland Clinic Sports Physical Therapy Residency. He continued his education then with a Manual Therapy Fellowship at Daemen College.

A few years back Michael unexpectedly ran into issues with fatigue and recovery which significantly hindered his training. After working closely with his wife, Kylene, a dietitian trained in Functional Sports Nutrition, he learned an entirely new approach to eating and living a more holistic lifestyle. This dramatic life change led to remarkable improvement in his overall energy and performance. In 2017, with the help of a Functional Sports Nutrition approach, he improved his half marathon PR by 5 minutes. These improvements inspired him to co-found FWDfuel Sports Nutrition to spread the word so that others could experience the same success.

Michael continues to train regularly and see improvements from a functional nutrition approach allowing him to qualify for the Boston Marathon in 2019.

Dry needling
for athletes

  • Accelerate your recovery from injuries and muscle soreness, getting you back in the game faster and stronger.
  • Target specific pain points, whether acute or chronic, to experience relief and regain your competitive edge.

Dry needling
for runners

  • Improve flexibility and range of motion, allowing for longer, more efficient runs with reduced risk of injury.
  • Speed up your post-run recovery by promoting increased blood flow and reducing inflammation, getting you back on the starting line sooner.

Dry needling
for cyclists

  • Experience relief from persistent saddle discomfort with targeted dry needling, allowing you to conquer longer rides with comfort.
  • Unlock tight and fatigued leg muscles, improving power output and endurance for peak cycling performance.

Trigger point
dry needling

  • By deactivating trigger points, dry needling might reduce pain associated with muscle tension, tightness, and knots. Studies suggest potential benefits for headaches, neck pain, back pain, and other musculoskeletal conditions.

How does dry needling work?

Dry needling works through distinct physiological mechanisms to address your pain. Here are three key ways it brings relief:

Decreased Muscle Tightness

When pain strikes, nearby muscles often tense up to protect the injured area. This creates a vicious cycle of pain and tension. Dry needling targets these trigger points, interrupting the nerve signals causing muscle guarding and promoting relaxation, much like relieving a painful muscle knot.

Improved Blood Flow

When muscles are tight, blood flow is reduced in a muscle. This causes a drop in the muscle pH leading to increased inflammation, pain, and impaired workout recovery. Dry needling releases muscle tension to improve blood flow, normalize pH, reduce pain, and restore muscle function.

Improved Muscle Performance

Tight muscles have decreased strength and endurance, leading to impaired performance and risk for injury. Dry Needling helps restore normal muscle function leading to improved strength and endurance as well as reduced risk for strains and injury.

Testimonials

Austin Smith

I had a ton of pain in my AC joint that had been going on for about a year, and after a couple dry needling sessions with Michael, my pain went from a 9/10, all the way down to a 0. He really knows what he is doing, and does a great job at not just solving your problems, but explaining what’s going on, and showing prevention methods to help keep the pain away. He showed me some stretches that I do now, and I can’t thank him enough for the relief he provided me!

Dustin Surace

I was referred to Michael by a colleague. I was having issues with my left arm due to an injury I sustained to my shoulder/neck. Working with Michael has been amazing. The pain is gone and I have my strength and mobility back in my left arm. I’ve seen countless others for what Michael was able to dramatically improve on the first visit! Quality guy. Awesome and effective service. 10/10 recommend!

The team at FWDfuel Physical Therapy is second to none. I just wrapped up my D1 collegiate lacrosse career, now I’m prepping for an Ironman. I have a torn labrum in my left shoulder, Michael and the team not only treated me with the best dry needling I’ve ever had(trust me I’ve had well over 50), but they gave me the knowledge and tools to implement on my own to better myself. No matter what your goals are, or what your background is, FWDfuel Physical Therapy will help you get there!
